MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) — Frontline US army commanders in Iraq say the withdrawal of American troops from the troubled northern city of Mosul is mired in confusion just 12 days ahead of the deadline for them to pull out.
Officers have told AFP they urgently need new rules to protect their men in the event of a dispute after June 30, when US soldiers must leave cities and major towns nationwide.
They also believe the political message emanating from Baghdad about the US withdrawal has created a false impression among Iraqi citizens that American troops will no longer be seen on Mosul’s streets when, in fact, they will.

BAGHDAD - On Monday, Gen. Ray Odierno told journalists at a press conference in Baghdad’s Green Zone that US troops (the “combat” ones, at least) were, in fact, on schedule to leave Mosul by the June 30 deadline set by the US/Iraq security agreement. Mosul, the most consistently violent city in Iraq, had been mentioned in past months as a possible exception to the deadline.

The days are falling off the calender and we’re about to wrap this deployment up! Our replacements are here and almost ready to take over our mission completely. Since we’ve got extra bodies now they’re sending teams to help with other missions. I’m running up north with a logistics convoy every other day now. It’s not a bad gig and we get to stay over night—Away from all the bullshit that’s back on the base!
